ANTIVIRAL THERAPY • HAART: • Introduced in 1996. • It is an abbreviation of HIGHLY ACTIVE ANTIRETROVIRAL THERAPY. • It is a collection of several types of antiviral drugs. • It slows down the infection. • Taking HAART therapy is not easy. These bundles of drugs must be taken at the right time, every single day.
ADVANTAGES • Improvement in patients health. • Reduction in complications of infection. • Increase the survival time of patient. • In the absence of HAART, average survival time is only 9.2 months. HAART is thought to increase the survival time between 4-12 years.
DISADVANTAGES • Large no of pills have to be taken frequently and appropriately. • A range of side effects may occur e.g. diarrhea , nausea, abnormal distribution of body fat etc. • Frequent mutations make the treatment ineffective. • Not eliminate the infection. • High blood levels of HIV is often HAART resistance. • Very lengthy method. • Doesn’t cure the patient from AIDS.
VACCINATION • Unfortunately still there is no effective vaccine against HIV exists. • One of the most prevalent reasons for this is that mutations in HIV’s genome occur frequently. • The reason behind the ineffectiveness of all the vaccines prepared previously was that HIV virus initial infection is so intense that the virus can replicate million of times within the cells in the first month of infection.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLASSICAL VACCINES AND HIV’S VACCINE • Classical vaccines mimic natural immunity against re-infection generally seen in individuals recovered from infection. On the other hand there are almost no recovered AIDS patient. • Most vaccines protect against disease not against infection.HIV infection may remained latent for long periods before causing AIDS.
FUTURE HORIZONS • Nonetheless many researchers still think that we can have a shot for preventing new infections or stopping the virus from killing those already infected. • To uncover innovative ways to combat HIV, researchers are now seeking a deeper understanding of how the virus over smarts our immune system and why previous vaccines attempts have failed.
