Proactive Tactic for Recruitment of Women into UT ME • External Advisory Committee asked whether it was possible to get to 25 in 5* * Actual goal was 30% based on studies suggesting that above this percentage minorities do not feel small in number.

Proactive Tactic for Recruitment of Women into UT ME • External Advisory Committee hypothesized that a small incentive ($1000 scholarship) would produce large results • One EAC member issued a challenge matching gift of $10,000. This ended up raising $130,500.
Proactive Tactic for Recruitment of Women into UT ME • UT Cockrell School of Engineering has a terrific Women in Engineering Program (WEP) and they administered the scholarship program. The program consisted of the following: • 1. Summer program for women considering engineering at UT (established potential scholarship pool – verbal description of ME scholarships was given)
Proactive Tactic for Recruitment of Women into UT ME • Sept-Nov : WEP sent letter to all female ME applicants and those that expressed interest in ME • If admitted all female students, were contacted by telephone to congratulate and encourage Freshman Interest Group (FIG)
Proactive Tactic for Recruitment of Women into UT ME • WEP made selected scholarship offers to students. FIG program required • Made 30 iterative offers • 6. Chair followed with call • 7. 19 (20 was goal) scholarships accepted - $2,000 each: $1,000 for fall semester • $1,000 for spring semester
