  7. About De Anza • Cupertino (Bay Area) • ~24,000 students • High rate of transfer • Large developmental and ESL populations

  8. Tutoring @ De Anza • ~1500 students served/quarter in 2 locations • Variety of subjects (English/ESL, Math, Sciences, Accounting, Econ, languages…) • Writing and Reading Center separate, but peer tutors trained in class co-taught with English • ~250 peer tutors/quarter • ~40-90 new tutors/quarter (more in Fall)

  9. Tutor Training @ De Anza Required for all new tutors. 3 “strands” 1. General subject individual tutors 2. Group tutors (adjunct skills & math/science) 3. Writing tutors Web used for all three Plus: paid staff meetings for all tutors

  10. General Subject Individual LRNA 98.55 = 1 unit P/NP hybrid • Orientation, senior tutors assigned • Discussion board (3 questions) • In class activities, role playing etc. • E-mailed journals • Videotape self-assessment • Extensive web resources

  11. Group LRNA 98.56 = 1 unit P/NP • Orientation, senior tutors assigned • In class activities, role playing etc. • E-mailed journals • Videotape self-assessment • Extensive web resources

  12. Writing EWRT/LRNA 97 = 3 unit hybrid • Orientation • In class activities, role playing etc. • Videotape self-assessment • Extensive web resources • Catalyst (Moodle) for forums, assignments and resources

  13. Catalyst (Moodle) Course Management System • Orientation and login during first class • Intro assignment and others on Forum (must respond to others’ work) • Dialogue Chamber • Links to weekly resources

  14. Advantages of Using a CMS • Creates strong community despite only one day/week on-campus • Provides models and inspiration for assignments • Extends class discussions • Convenient for team teaching and grading • Pushes web resources

  15. Future Plans • Catalyst into all training courses • Hybrid to fully online options for all strands • Online space for senior tutor mentoring • New training strand for math/science tutors • Cadre of online tutors (Catalyst and CCC Confer)
