Phase I Alternative C Terrace Design • Terraces would give the park a spacious feel and allow for landscapeing. • Terraces will better fit on the slope when slanted to make use of all excavated fill. • Car pull-out at the bottom of the slope will provide better access for handicapped people. • A 10 ft deck aligned with the building provides better over all pod viewing along with beautiful views of the inlet.
Phase I Alternative C Walkways • The slope of the terrace is not greater than 1:20 so walkways do not require handrails which opens up the exhibits to feel more park-like. • Meandering sidewalks give flow to the exhibits and encourage people to take time viewing the pods. • The meandering sidewalks will also add to individual pod seclusion.
Phase I Alternative C Pods • Pods are located on the edge of each terrace with room for benches and a magnificent view over Knik Arm. • Pod placement creates a more open feeling rather than cut into the hill which could feel cramped. • Placement creates an interesting effect with the terracing which would be visually appealing.
Phase I Alternative C Excavation • Design cuts into the hill as little as possible, without importing fill, in order to try and circumvent problems with utility placement. • Each terrace is 40 ft wide by 300 ft long which not only fits to the slope well but is symmetrical allowing contractor to make use of the cut by using it to fill the other half of each terrace.
