  2. How can we live out our Biblical mandate in these days?

  3. What do you do when life takes you to the ragged edge of reality?

  4. Isaiah 41:1-10

  5. 1“Be silent before me, you islands!  Let the nations renew their strength!  Let them come forward and speak; let us meet together at the place of judgment.  2“Who has stirred up one from the east, calling him in righteousness to his service.

  6. He hands nations over to him and subdues kings before him. He turns them to dust with his sword, to windblown chaff with his bow. 3He pursues them and moves on unscathed, by a path his feet have not traveled before.

  7. 4Who has done this and carried it through, calling forth the generations from the beginning?  I, the LORD—with the first of them  and with the last—I am he.”  5The islands have seen it and fear; the ends of the earth tremble. They approach and come forward;.

  8. 6each helps the other and says to his brother, “Be strong!” 7The craftsman encourages the goldsmith, and he who smoothes with the hammer spurs on him who strikes the anvil. He says of the welding, “It is good.” He nails down the idol so it will not topple.

  9. 8“But you, O Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, you descendants of Abraham my friend, 9I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you.

  10. 10So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

  11. Question: What are the two commands in this passage?

  12. “Fear not…” Isa. 41:10

  13. “Do not anxiously look about you …” Isa. 41:10

  14. Question: What are God’s reasons for these two commands?

  15. 1) "For I am with you"—"Do not fear, for I am with you.” 2) "I am your God"—"Do not look anxiously about you, for I am your God.” 3) "I will strengthen you.” 4) "Surely I will help you.” 5) "Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

  16. Restated: God is with me; God is my God; God will strengthen me; God will help me; God will uphold me.

  17. Fear not . . . God is with you; Fear not . . . God is your God; Fear not . . . God will strengthen you; Fear not . . . God will help you; Fear not . . . God will uphold you.

  18. The Judge of All the EarthIn Isaiah 41:1 God says, "Coastlands, listen to Me in silence, and let the peoples gain new strength; let them come forward, then let them speak; let us come together for judgment." Judge

The Ruler of All RulersIn Isaiah 41:2–3 Isaiah asks, "Who has aroused one from the east [probably Cyrus the Persian king that God stirred up to come against Babylon] whom He [God] calls in righteousness to His feet? He delivers up nations before him, and subdues kings. He makes them like dust with his sword, as the wind-driven chaff with his bow." Ruler

  20. The Uncreated First, YahwehIn Isaiah 41:4 Isaiah asks, "Who has performed and accomplished it, calling forth the generations from the beginning? 'I, the Lord, am the first, and with the last. I am He.'" First

  21. The God Who Chose His Own People In verses 5–7 Isaiah shows us the desperate attempts of the nations to persuade themselves that they and their gods are strong. Verse 5: they are afraid and they come together. Verse 6: they try to encourage each other not to be afraid, and say, "Be strong!" Verse 7: the idol makers who smooth the metal and nail up the idols with nails try to encourage each other and say, "It is good." Chose

  22. That God says to us who believe, I am your God. I am with you. I will strength you. I will help you. I will uphold you.

  23. Then Comes the Command - On These foundational truths Therefore —because I am the judge of the nations . . . Therefore—because I rule the rulers of history . . . Therefore—because I call nations into being . . . Therefore—because I choose freely my own . . .

  24. Therefore - because I - this great and sovereign God - I am your God and I am with you and I will strengthen you and I will help you and I will uphold you . . . Therefore, do not fear.

  25. Let me Change the Language a Little: I am your God—over you. I am with you—by your side. I will strengthen you—from inside of you. I will help you—all around you from wherever the enemy comes. I will uphold you—from underneath you.

  26. Over you, by you, inside you, around you, underneath you. Therefore do not fear.
