TECT Utica • Manufactures titanium turbine blades for aircraft engines • TECT generates ~313 tons/year of hazardous waste (titanium etching operation) • Spends ~$450K/year on disposal NYSP2I: Providing assistance to extend the bath life of nitric and hydrofluoric acid solutions, thereby reducing operating costs and generation of hazardous waste

Children’s Furniture Manufacturing Assessment • Manufacturer of maple furniture and spaces designed for children • Produce ~4,000 cribs/year • Goal: eliminate PVC from children’s cribs and replace the mattress with a more environmentally friendly alternative in order for the cribs to meet third party certification • Potential to eliminate 5,440lbs PVC per year from the bite guards and 1,520lbs from the mattress covers • P2I’s role: identify alternatives for the bite guard and mattress and rank them according to EHS attributes to assist CP in decision making

Monroe Plating • About the Company: • Specializes in Zinc Plating • Four fully automated zinc plating machines with • computer-controlled finishing lines • Broad volume range: Low (prototype) to High • (30,000 units/day) Baseline: • Currently uses 14.2 million gallons/year of water costing ~$38,000/year. • 34,500 gallons of acid waste disposed annually. NYSP2Is role: • Installation of counterflow, reactive and spray rinsing systems resulting in potential reduction of water usage by 35% (or 4.37 million gallons annually) and potential cost savings of ~$12K annually • Evaluation of Reverse Osmosis (RO) system to reclaim a portion of the treated wastewater (10,000 gallon/day at minimum). Reduction of at least 7 gallons/minute (1.7 million gal/year) and $4K annually. • Extending acid bath life using PRO-pHx. would reduce acid used by ~50% and reduce sludge generated. Cost savings include labor (to drain, refill, and treat the waste acid) and savings resulting from buying less acid.

Acme Smoked FishReduction of Water Use • Producer of smoked fish • Fish arrive frozen from overseas and must be thawed in running water, which takes several hours in the winter months due to the low temperature of supply water • Proposed approach: • Capture waste heat from cogeneration plant • Install heat exchanger to transfer waste heat to incoming water • Improve distribution of water in thawing tanks with diffusers • Anticipated Results: • >80% reduction in water use and wastewater discharges • Higher yield of properly thawed fish

Film Biz RecyclingGreen Production Guide and Film Vendor List • Goal: Provide information and resources to help productions (film, T.V., video, etc.) lessen their environmental impact. • Creation of The Practical Guide to a Greener Production, which provides information on how to prevent waste and present green alternatives to current procedures. • Creation of a website that will encourage online collaboration within the film community for the ongoing development of the guide and vendor website.

Huntington Breast Cancer Coalition and Learning Disabilities Association Preventing Pollution at Home and in Our Community • Goal: develop and disseminate environmental health message with a focus on children • Look Before you LEAP toolkit (LEAP = L:lead, E: endocrine disruptors, A: air pollution, P: pesticides) • Toolkit to include: toxic triggers, healthy reference cards, activity book, game board for children’s education • Distribute 1,000+ healthy reference cards with a focus on Healthy Home, Environment, Community, and Eating
