Research Paper Sample should be double-spaced Swift had difficulty for most of his adult life with authority and human respect. As a member of the clergy he abided by the Church of England rules and laws for the most part but ignored them when they seemed to conflict with a higher principle (“J. Swift” 245).For example, once while walking through town he passed an alley in which a prostitute and her customer were having an argument. The verbal abuse soon grew into a physical struggle and the man beat the whore quite brutally. Swift ran down the alley, pulled the man off the woman, and thrashed him soundly before flinging him into the street warning him not to return (Gerard 74).
Research Paper Sample (continued) This incident was reported back to the bishop, Swift’s supervisor, who called him in and reprimanded him for aiding the prostitute. The bishop charged Swift with bringing dishonor to the clerical garb he wore by helping a person “who was little more than an animal” (Davis 324).Swift knew that such behavior would be condemned but did it anyway because he could not abide bullies. However, though he submitted to the bishop’s censure, he did not alter his behavior (Ehrenpreis 199).
