  2. RULE #1 Parts of a Sentence A sentence expresses a complete thought. Every complete sentence has two parts. • A subject names the person,place or thing the sentence is about. • The predicate tells what the subject is or does. Subject Predicate A fat sheep ate grass in the field. The children were playing two square. Everybodylaughed at the clown’s tricks.

  3. RULE #2 Four Kinds of Sentences Declarative sentence. • A statement that tells something. It ends in a period. Interrogative sentence. • A question (asks something). Ends in a ? Exclamatory • An exclamatory (shows strong felling.) It ends in an ! Imperative sentence • A command (tells someone to do something.) It ends in a period (.).

  4. Look out for that truck! That is my new unicycle. Did you enjoy the Thanksgiving dinner? Get in the car, we’re leaving. Watch out for those amphibians!

  5. RULE #3 Conjunctions Conjunctions are words that join other words or groups of words. Here are some examples: and, or, but. • It’s raining cats and dogs outside. • Do you want Crush soda or A&W Root Beer soda? • I want to play but I have work to do.

  6. RULE #4 Common and Proper nouns A noun is a person, place,thing or idea. • Common nouns name any person place or thing. They will not begin with a capital letter. • Proper nouns name a specific noun. It will start with capital letter.

  7. Proper noun Common noun city Disneyland toy Mr. Jackson Man Legos automobile Cadillac Amusement park Boston

  8. Singular and plural nouns Rule #5 Some nouns only name one person place or thing. Others name more then one. • Singular nouns: Names one person, place or thing. • Plural nouns: name more than one person, place or thing.

  9. Plural nouns Singular nouns cake monkey man box bench puppy cakes monkeys men boxes Benches puppies

  10. Forming plural nouns Rule #6 To make plural nouns , add s or es. For most nouns add: s clock s boat s finger s For nouns ending in s, sh, ch, x, or z add: es. watch es fox es peach es

  11. For nouns ending in a consonant followed by change the y to and i babies baby cherry cherries berry berries

  12. Rule #7 Irregular plural nouns Some nouns have special plural forms. These are called irregular plural nouns.

  14. Pronouns Rule #8 A pronoun is a word that takes the place of one or more nouns What is a pronoun? pronoun noun I You She It They we Me You Him Her It Them us Put noun and pronoun in their right place.

  15. Name yourself last when you are talking about anther person and yourself. Using I and me Rule #9 Jim and I play soccer. The teacher and I worked the problem together. Do you want to play with Jim and me? Billy sits at the same table as Tanya and me.
