  2. Why Consider Natural Regeneration? • Public pressure is mounting to promote alternatives to clearcutting • Offers the forester an opportunity to reduce forest renewal costs • It has been shown that seedlings establish promptly after wildfires

  3. Things to Consider • Management objective • Site characteristics: soil, slope, aspect etc. • Seed source and species of interest • When the fire occurred

  4. Pros • Mixed stands are likely to come in after fire • Higher initial stand densities • Seedlings will thrive if they establish before existing vegetation • Easier for seeds to penetrate the soil

  5. Cons • Usually require density reduction or spacing treatments to maximize early crop growth • Hard for seedlings to establish due to increased solar radiation • Slow • Seed availability
