INTRODUCTION TO CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP The Central truth about the teaching on Christian leadership is that leadership is God’s method and God’s tool for working out His plan and His purpose for earth and people. It is important to know that the success or failure of any group, secular or religious, is directly in the hands of its leaders. Leadership is very challenging but all of us should wake up to this challenge. Leaders are instruments of change-positive change People look up to their leaders for direction, security, guidance etc As we look into this subject weigh your leadership and see whether you are a successful leader or not.

  4. 2 DEFINITION OF CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP Leaders are defined in different ways: • Movers • Initiators • Actors and • Performers Three classification of mankind • Those who do not know what is happening • Those who match what is happening • Those who cause what is happening to happen Leaders are those who have capacity to influence people towards worthwhile course. Christian leadership is one guided by biblical standards Mk 10:42-45 Servant hood Humility Love/Compassion Mat 9:36,37 There is danger invading Christian leadership, copying from earthly leadership.

THREE AREAS CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP MUST BE CONCERNED WITH PEOPLE -What leaders like and how they relate to other people. • People who lead and follow • Leaders appreciate people (Moses) • Leaders grow and help others grow (part) TASKS -What leaders do and how they guide others into the work. • Leaders plan and organize • Leaders communicate • Leaders solve problems and make decisions. GOALS -How leaders establish objectives and work with people to achieve the good of the church. • Leaders accept responsibility • Leaders work toward objectives • Leaders are motivated and motivate others NB. Each of the above requires full treatment on its on but because of time, I will stop there.

  6. QUALIFICATION FOR CHRISTIAN LEADERS Qualifications show what leaders are like: a Empathy – feeling with others. See Lk 6:35, Heb. 13:3, 1Pet3:8; Gal 6:2 This quality enables you to work with people. b Competence – skills needed for the work. He knows facts and where to find information to help others. See Ex. 35-36, Prov. 12:27, 22:29 Work hard, set goals for yourself and those who follow you. NB. This quality helps you do the task effectively.

  7. C A sense of mission or calling to help you achieve the objectives goals. In goal achievement, a leader is able to set goals and work toward them until they are achieved. Christian leader set goals for himself and his group with the frame work of the achievement of God’s purposes Phil 3:14, Eph 3:10-11, 2Tim 3:10 Paul had a goal in mind. d Emotional stability- reasonable, confident and careful Not easily angered, not willful or discouraged. Able to react in a peaceful and graceful manner in all situations Ps- 27-14, Ph 4:31, 2Tim 4:5, 1Pet 4:7 e Group membership - A strong sense of being part of the group - Aware of common interests, enjoys working with others. 1Cor12: Eph 4:12 – 16 - Individuals in the church find their true life and usefulness when they are joined and held together by every supporting ligament. Eph. 4:16

  8. f Ability to share leadership:- • The idea is trusting others with responsibilities • has to do with trust, humility and respect of for others. Eph 5:21, Phil 4:1-3, Col. 47:14: 1 Thess1:2-4 • Compare God trusts us. g Consistency and dependability • Keep your words • Motivate people toward goals set • Don’t change your mind without informing others • Obey the regulations you set for others. Be consistent and dependable Luke 9:62, 1Cor 15:58, 5:1, Eph 4:4 h Truthfulness and honesty • Transparency and accountability • Handle church property honestly

  9. iPrayerful and spirit filled • See 70 elders in numbers • See Ac. 6 • Jeremiah was a prayerful man • Daniel was a prayerful man • Jesus was a prayerful person Pastor and elders should meet regularly for prayers What prayers can do, nothing else can do!! JThreefold expression of faith • Faith in oneself - Phil 4:13 • Faith in God - Heb. 11:6 • Faith in others - Math 28: 18-20 K Manage well your family in accordance with God’s word 1Tim 3:1-7 • Love your wife and fulfill your obligation to her. • Wives obey your husbands and fulfill your marital obligation • Bring up your children in the Lord’s fear.

THE PERSONALITY OF CHRISTIAN LEADER • Take care of your health • Eat well • Sleep enough • Go for treatment if sick • Dress up well • Not necessarily expensive • Clean clothes • Iron out shirts/coats/ties etc • Polish your shoes • Wear clothes that fit your body and size -Brush your teeth, comb your hair, shave well, wash your socks, wash your body etc

Keep pulpit manners • Avoid mannerisms • Don’t lean on the pulpit as your talk • Don’t lean forward while seated, ladies • may think you are after something • Use your handkerchief when you cough or • wipe your nose- don’t use bare hands or • put fingers into your nostrils. • Sit upright while on the pulpit. • Put your legs together while seated.

  12. 6 CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP AND AUTHORITY • Mk 10:42-45, 1 Pet 5:1-4, 1Cor 9, Jn 13 • Biblical guidelines • a) Exercise authority in fear of the Lord. • b) Christian leaders are not to go in the way of the world • - Spirit of competition • - Jealousy and envy • - Loading it over your followers • - Scaring and threatening those under you. • - Using your power and authority wrongly to enrich yourself by misdirecting the resources. • c) Humility and servanthood leads to greatness in the kingdom of God. • d) Speak the truth in love • e) Use your authority and power to protect those under you. • f) Remember you are a servant; Jesus is the MASTER of all. • g) Transparency and accountability is required at every level. • h) Favouritism, tribalism and nepotism must be shunned. • i) Discipline wrong doers • j) Be a good example

  13. CONCLUSION Brethren, we are Christian leaders of the day. • Are you succeeding or failing? • Strict observance of the above will • lead to true success. • Cause positive change around you. • Meet the laid- down qualifications. • Seek to excel in all areas of leadership.
