  1. THE BUILDING ENVELOPESustainable Building Source: http://www.lsuagcenter.com/en/family_home/home/la_house/about_lahouse/

  2. Name and Background Imran K. Phillip Grambling State University Major: Engineering Technology Rising Senior in the Department of Engineering Technology. Research interests are in Sustainable Green Building and Smart Houses.

  3. Mentors Name and Background: Dr. EMERALD M. ROIDER • Assistant Professor, Department of Construction Management & Industrial Engineering (LSU) • Ph.D. (2007), Louisiana State University • Areas of specialization: Water quality, mathematical modeling, project management and engineering graphics • Title of research Project: “Energy Performance of LEED Buildings”

  4. Title of Research Project: To Quantify The Impact of Exterior Wall Framing Systems on Energy Use, at LaHouse

  5. Context and Background For Project The LSU AgCenter’s Louisiana Home and Landscape Resource Center, also known as LaHouse, provides a model and serves as a display of sustainable construction materials and technologies, on how to build sustainable housing. Three different framing methods were used in the construction process of LaHouse, those are: advanced framing or optimum value engineering (OVE), structural insulated panels (SIPS) and insulated concrete forms (ICF). This research will focus on these three framing methods in the building envelope and measure of energy use on LaHouse, also costs and benefits associated with them.

  6. Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) 2. The ICF blocks are tied to vertical and horizontal rebar 1. ICF blocks are aligned and stacked on slab with embedded rebar reinforcement 3. Concrete is pumped into forms with rebar reinforcement inside – forming wall with 6” concrete core.

  7. Optimum Value Engineering 1. OVE Advanced Framing 2. (2x6 studs spaced 24 inches o.c.) stack framing, efficient details with borate-treated pine – similar cost as conventional framing, yet higher performance

  8. Structural Insulated Panel System 1. Highly energy efficient, strong, straight, fast assembly, less skilled labor 2. Roof framing and insulation in one step

  9. Problem, Purpose and Task being Addressed Energy use of any house is a vital aspect to consider, and exterior walls are an important factor affecting the energy usage of a building. Innovative building systems now exist and offer significant advantages over conventional construction techniques. These advantages include: energy efficiency, reduced material waste, increased productivity and compression of the construction schedule.

  10. Research Question Which innovative framing system used in the construction of LaHouse, is the most beneficial and proficient to sustainable building in terms of energy use?

  11. Methodology • Determine expected performance characteristics of the framing methods utilized at LaHouse. • Utilize Autodesk Revit Architecture to build virtual models of LaHouse using each framing system. • Develop input data files for Energy Plus, an energy simulation software package distributed by the Department of Energy. • Simulate energy usage for each virtual model of LaHouse in Energy Plus.

  12. Tentative Time Table Week 1 : • Learn Autodesk Revit Architecture Week 2 : • Construct Model of LaHouse in Autodesk Revit Architecture • Learn Echo Tech and importing files from Autodesk Revit to Echo Tech Week 3 : • Reconstruct model in Echo Tech and measure volume of energy use Week 4 : • Calculate which innovative framing method is better for the different areas of LaHouse • Presenting Finding to faculty mentor and PDSI staff.

  13. Qualifications For Undertaking Project Academic: Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, Castries, St. Lucia • Associates Degree in Architectural Technology • Certificate of Unit credit towards Technician Diploma in construction (City & Guilds) Experience: Architectural Assistant • Ministry of Environment and Housing (Architectural Section), Castries, St. Lucia

  14. Key Words • Building envelope: Is the separation between the interior and the exterior environments of a building. It serves as the outer shell to protect the indoor environment as well as to facilitate its climate control. <Wikipedia> • Autodesk RevitArchitecture: Is Building Information Modeling software which allows the user to design with both parametric 3D modeling and 2D drafting elements. • Ecotect: Autodesk Ecotect Analysis is an environmental analysis tool that allows designers to simulate building performance right from the earliest stages of conceptual design.
