Introduction • Income inequity between rural-urban • Poverty rate are high in the community engage in agriculture • Vulnerability of agriculture-based is found high under uncertainty of environmental change (ie. Extreme events, drought, typhoon, etc) • GMS has focus area on rural development with integration
Non-farm activities and Rural development • Non farm activities refer to those activities that are not primary agriculture, forestry or fishery. However, non farm include trade or processing of agricultural products (Gordon A. and Craig C., 2001) • Hosn and Hammound (2009) suggested two schemes to measure rural development as: • Scheme 1: RD includes Natural Environment, social well being, conditions for economic well-being • Scheme 2: “Asset pentagon” refers to human, social, financial, natural and physical capital

Research question • What are the non-farm activities in the context of rural development in the GMS rural area? • How do the non-farm activities contribute to household income? • How do the non-farm activities affect on household economy in Yunan, Myanmar and Vietnam
Objectives • To explore the types of non-farm activities in rural area of the GMS, • To study the roles of non-farm income for rural development, • To explore the factors affected the income of non-farm activities.

Scope of research • Social and Geographical • Vietnam, Yunnan and Myanmar. • Villages • # households (210 HHs/ country) • Respondents • Respondents must be those who live in the village (not included strangers) • Not count the respondents who quit before the end of interviewing. • Time • Farming season and post-harvest season
