    1. ECKPHC MLC-3 Update

    2. Since Session 2… Regional Description~ OOPS!!! Issue statement- YIKES!!! 65% of the adults in the East Central Region are overweight or obese, due to physical inactivity, as compared to the State of Kansas average of 61%. Public Health Luncheon~ We started inviting Commissioners/Representatives to regional monthly meeting Community Engagement Activity We got so wrapped up in the data that we overlooked the regional description so we backed up and completed that step. We really struggled with the Issue Statement and went around and around the PDA cycle. We felt like we needed and asked for a little more guidance on the Issue Statement. We utilized Survey Monkey for a survey for Medical professionals and that did not work well for us at all. We only had a participation of XXXXXX We are inviting Comms/Reps to our monthly meeting to discuss with them what Public Health is and have had a great turnout with that and have gotten good feedback on what we need to do for them to get the word out about Public Health. Last month we invited a local radio station and newspaper along with having 2 Commissioners attend. We conducted a Community Engagement activity of Sept. 8th where we took our Issue statement and had our community partners work thru 3 Why’s and then categorized the subjects using Affinity and 2X2. 3. QI Tools Used Brainstorming Affinity 5 Why’s (3 Why’s and a How) Nominal 2 X 2

    4. Community Engagement Scheduled one month out Sent power point explaining MLC-3 ahead of time Invited a core public/environmental health group that already meets regularly Added community partners from each county Utilized a 5 Why (3 Why) and an Affinity for how to address the problem On Sept. 8th we invited a public health committee which already exists and includes an Associate Professor at ESU, a Chemical Safety Officer, an Esu Athletic Physician and a nursing school Instructor) and then each team member invited community partners from each county and had a good mix of professionals including Extension Agents, EMS and other health dept. staff. 5. The Good Sending the power point out ahead of time We stayed quiet as to allow better participation of the group Good variety of players We met right after the activity to analyze the answers

    6. The Bad Too rushed~should have allowed more time for activity We met right after the activity to analyze the answers We didn’t stick to our plan I think we were a little surprised at how much dialogue took place from the partners. We could have easily allowed another 30 minutes of time for that. Some of the team had participants drive an hour and then felt a little rushed getting the activity done. We had already been working on the project since 9am and were brain dead. Originally when we had met,we were going to work on the Storyboard then move onto the activity but we ended up using our time for the activity (before and after) so didn’t get any work done on the Storyboard. The group was really starting to open up between themselves and then we cut it off.I think we were a little surprised at how much dialogue took place from the partners. 7. The Ugly We should have included some players from lower socioeconomic groups Should have served a healthier lunch We felt like we really missed the boat here as we really would have benefited from others input when drilling down the “Why’s”. We served pizza and it was brought to our attention by one of the participants that we could have had a healthier choice. We felt like we really missed the boat here as we really would have benefited from others input when drilling down the “Why’s”. 8. Lessons Learned Allow more time for activity Serve a healthier option for lunch Remaining quiet worked Should have included lower socioeconomic players Split the group to work on two activities, or planned another day to continue the work

    9. MLC-3 Overall The Good MLC-3 meetings scheduled in conjunction with Regional Emergency Preparedness meetings We look ahead & give deadlines to get things done We have data (and lots of it !!) Increased Public Health visibility with Commissioners/Legislators Developing skills for a CHA

    10. The Bad Need more skills for a CHA Keeping all players on task and work on time management

    11. The Ugly Technology can be our best friend, but also our worst enemy Maintaining momentum can be a challenge Is full regional participation possible on every activity? There is not enough time in the day!

    12. Remember: Keep thinking outside the box Keep reminding ourselves and others (both formally and informally) what our mission is Utilize available resources Think about how you can get other players involved and active to keep building on those relationships already established and new ones Go back to why you are doing what you are doing and remind others of that factThink about how you can get other players involved and active to keep building on those relationships already established and new ones Go back to why you are doing what you are doing and remind others of that fact
