  4. Cattle are ruminant animals. Ruminant means that they have 4 stomach compartments. These compartments are: • Rumen • Reticulum • Omasum • Abomasum

  5. The rumen and reticulum: • The first place food goes as it passes into the stomach compartments is the rumen and reticulum. Many bacteria and microbes live here. It is in the rumen that food and bacteria are churned to break food down into smaller particles.

  6. The omasum: • The omasum is responsible for grinding food as it leave the rumen/reticulum. It also squeezes out most of the moisture.

  7. The abomasum: • The abomasum is the “true stomach.” This is where the breakdown of food is completed before it passes into the small intestine.
