subject - action verb - direct object (a noun or pronoun that receives the action, answers verb what?)
subject - a.v. - indirect object (a noun or pronoun that answers to whom or for whom?)-DO
3. SENTENCE PATTERNS linking verbs Subject - linking verb - predicate adjective (an adjective that describes the subject)
subject - linking verb - predicate nominative (a noun or pronoun that renames the subject)
4. ACTION vs. LINKING VERBS most verbs are action
sense verbs when the subject is doing something (ex. I smelled the flower.)
to be verbs when they are helping action verbs (ex. We will be skiing soon.)
very few verbs are linking
sense verbs when the subject is just being something (ex. The flower smelled enticing.)
to be verbs when they are not helping a.v.s
5. PARTS OF SENTENCE strategy cross out all prepositional phrases and label the object of the prep. phrase (the noun or pronoun at the end of the phrase)
find the verb
if it’s action, look for nothing, a DO, or the IO - DO combination
if it’s linking, look for a PA or PN
6. REMEMBER!!!!!! You must be able to recognize all prepositions.
You must know the difference between action and linking verbs.
PA or PN always go with linking verbs and DO or the IO/DO combination with action verbs.
You can never have an IO without a DO.
