3. Building… 3 Grade Levels: 6th, 7th, 8th
Three Houses: Red, White, and Blue
About 100 students in each house, at each grade level
All 6th grade students are housed on 2nd Floor
2 Cafeterias, a Media Center, restrooms in each house hallway, upstairs office, downstairs office, & a courtyard
4. Teachers & Students You will travel to almost all your classes with the same students
You will have one teacher for math, one for language arts, one for science, and one for social studies. These will be the same teachers all year long. This is considered your “team” of teachers. Their classrooms are right beside each other.
You will also have an intervention specialist working with the team of teachers/students.
5. Classes Core classes are considered: Math, language arts, science, and social studies
Encore classes are considered: Phys. Ed, Choir, Family Living, Health, Gateway to Technology, Computer & Art
You will attend all the encore classes, on a rotating basis. You will have two encores a day, when you may not be with students from your house, but will be with 6th graders.
6. Challenging Programs Advanced Classes in 6th grade:
Social Studies & Language Arts…a 2 hour integrated block
Math & Science….a 2 hour integrated block
How will students be placed in Advanced Classes? Teacher Recommendation, Test Scores, Observations, Pre-assessment, & Talented and Gifted recommendations
8. Extras We also provide:
Orchestra & Band
Whole School Assemblies, Reward Assemblies for Honor & Merit Roll, attendance, as well as “No Discipline”
A club for everyone! (Student Council, FCA, Photo Club, Earth Club, Robotics Club, Art Club, JTI, Citizen’s Club)
9. Safety Mr. Parker is our Dean of Students.
Officer Brown is our School Resource Officer, dressed in Uniform, whom also has an office in the building. We will have a new police officer next year.
Surveillance cameras are in use in the hallways and on buses.
Teachers monitor the hallways during all class changes, as well as before and after school.

11. Need Help? Mrs. Nicol will be your guidance counselor for the three years you are at Grant. Role of guidance…
We offer after school “Homework Club” Monday-Thursday, where teachers are available to help you with your homework. This is in the library. Students can take advantage of the activity bus that runs afterward. Students can also take advantage of Rec club- which runs until 5pm with an activity bus to follow.
12. Parental Support
Check Progressbook as often as possible!! See grades, missing assignments, and daily discipline infractions
Teachers have daily “team time” to collaborate and brainstorm on student learning. You could meet with them during this time!

13. Frequently Asked Questions… School starts 8:10am, Ends at 2:50pm…When 6th graders arrive, they are held in the cafeteria until it is time to release to class.
Lockers- each child will be provided a combination lock
ID Cards- will be provided; need them at lunch and library
Lunch- seating- Students get to pick seats
Walking vs. Riding a Bus- Bus routes available in Aug.
Interacting with 7th and 8th graders- We are on Different schedules. Interaction should be minimal!
Library use- Not part of daily schedule. Use as needed
14. More FAQ Food choices- Deli Salads, Ice Cream… You can still pre-pay child’s account
Sports involvement in 6th grade- students can “manage” a team by helping out at practice and games; students can participate in cross-country and weight-lifting, and Rec club
Cell Phones-Keep them locked up and turned off in your locker! IPods-If you are early to school- you can use them while you are waiting to go to class.
Wheel shoes- These present a safety concern. Not Permitted!
Gym Clothes-Bring a change of clothes for gym- every day for the semester you have PE!
