  4. Major Events • Construction of the Trans-Siberian Railroad (1904) • Russo-Japanese War ended unsuccessfully (1905) • Joined World War I (1914) • Russian Revolution (1917)

  5. Opposition • Czar wanted to modernize/industrialize Russia • Marxist revolutionaries plotted to overthrow the czar • Bolsheviks were willing to sacrifice everything for drastic change • Lenin was a major leader of opposition

  6. Bloody Sunday (1905) • The people wanted better working conditions, more personal freedoms, and an elected national legislature • Russian people marched on the Winter Palace- police open fire, killing between 500 and 1,000 people

  7. Bloody Sunday Continued • Provoked a wave of strikes and violence • Duma (Parliament) was created to appease the people • It was later disbanded

  8. World War I • 1914 Russia joined the war • War brought defeat after defeat for Russia • Nicholas moved to the front lines in a failed attempt to improve morale • Soldiers mutinied • March 1917 the czar was forced to abdicate the throne
