  5. Thesis Statements – Review When do I use a Thesis Statement? Persuasive and Expository Where should I put the thesis statement? The last sentence of your introduction!

  6. How do I write the thesis statement? Use the prompt question and re-word it into a statement that includes your own ideas. EXAMPLE PROMPT: Teachers can be important people for us. Describe one of the most important teachers in your life. Explain what qualities they have and what makes them such a good mentor. THESIS: The most important teacher in my life was Mrs. Kaplan, my 7th grade English teacher because she was supportive, optimistic, and passionate about English.

  7. Now you try:How do I write a thesis statement? Work with your seat partner to write a thesis statement that restates the prompt and previews your points. EXAMPLE PROMPT: Everyone has an activity that they enjoy doing. It might be playing an instrument or a sport. Think about what you like to do the most. Write an essay telling your classmates what you enjoy doing and at least three reasons why you like this activity so well. THESIS: An activity I enjoy doing is cooking because I love eating the food I make, it helps me relax, and it’s fun to cook with other people.

EXAMPLE PROMPT: If you look at any monthly calendar we use in the United States, you will see days set aside to honor special people. What special person in your life do you feel should be added to our national list of holidays? Write an essay persuading our lawmakers to adopt your special person to honor on our national calendar. You do not need to know the specific date at this time. Use detailed examples as to why this person deserves such an honor. THESIS: Harper Lee is an excellent person to honor on our national calendar because she is known for writing one of the best American novels of all time, she helped begin the discussion of segregation and unfair trials, and she has been awarded many medals and honors for her writing.

EXAMPLE PROMPT: Many celebrities— such as actors, musicians, models, or athletes— make a great deal of money. Some people think celebrities make more money than they deserve. Other people think celebrities’ wealth is deserved because of the enjoyment they bring to the public. Do you agree or disagree that celebrities make more money than they deserve? Now, write an essay in which you persuade the reader that your side of the issue is correct. Use facts and examples to support your argument. THESIS: Most celebrities make more money than they deserve because many of the celebrities aren’t even that talented, the money they earn is much more than necessary to survive, and the celebrities are usually prodigal and waste their earnings on impractical things.
