Discussion • What does it mean that you get an A in ENGL 202? • It means your paper is ready for submission? • If so, what do you do next? • If not, what do you have to do next? • Why do you need to publish your work?
Myths • ONLY famous professors can publish their articles. • Undergradstudentscannot publish their papers • ESL students cannot get published their work.
Publication Process Negotiation
Step 1: Going to Journals/ Websites • Readcarefully the FIRST/TOP page in a journal or on a website. • Find the page entitled: • For Authors; • For Contributors; • Journal Submission; • Submission Guideline;
English Teaching Forum • http://exchanges.state.gov/englishteaching/forum-journal.html
Step 2: Going Back to Your Work • Just FOLLOW the submission guideline. • Modify your paper for the publication. • Format (APA, MLA, Chicago…) • Word Counts (or Page Numbers) • Audience • Structure (Abstract, Intro, Lit Review, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, References, Appendices)
Step 3: Submitting to the Editor • Letter to the editor (Cover Letter) • Self-introduction • Explanation of the study • What was the purpose? • What was the goal? • Significance of the study • Why important? • What contribution do you make to the Journal? • Sample Letter
Benefits:Working for Publication (1)Acceptance • Academic accomplishment • Contribution to your academic field • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
Benefits:Working for Publication (2)Rejection • The editor sends yousome useful comments from two reviewers. • To understand what you need to do. • To revise (or rewrite? re-focus?) your paper based on their comments. • To prepare for the next publication (different journals)
Final Notes: from my experience… • Equalopportunities to get our work published. • Don’t disrespect your work. • YOU are NOT the person who decides the quality of your work. • You are the AUTHOR. • Don’t give up.
