Crime severity index • New method of quantifying crime • Attaches higher weights to major crimes and lower weights to minor crimes • It is a rate per population • Includes drugs and criminal traffic offences • Accommodates more than one crime per incident • Accommodates more than one victim per violent incident • Statistics Canada’s choice for measuring crime • Easy to monitor changes in crime over time • Three measures • Overall Crime Severity Index • Violent Crime Severity Index • Non-Violent Crime Severity Index

  3. Findings • Crime Severity Indices are calculated for Police Jurisdictions – this are no CSI Indices for Mississauga • Peel Region ranked • 37th out of 208 on Overall CSI • 103rd our of 208 on Violent CSI • 16th out of 208 on Non-Violent CSI

Crime rates • Traditional method of quantifying crime • Rate per 10,000 persons • No distinction between major and minor crimes • Does not include drugs or criminal traffic offences • Reports one crime per incident Findings • Comparison with Canadian urban areas with populations over 15,000 - Mississauga (with and without airport) has lower • Total Crime Rate • Property Crime Rate • Crimes Against Persons Rate
