Body Composition 300 Q • What are the methods available to determine body fat? Does a scale help you to determine your body fat? Why or why not?
Body Composition 300 Answer • The most accurate way to determine body fat is underwater weighing. In this method, a person is placed on a scale and submersed in water. Calipers, taking skin fold measurements, provides another fairly accurate way to determine body fat. Near-infrared light technology is yet another way to measure body fat. Hand held devices and scales designed to measure body fat currently have a large margin of error. • The scale is not one of them. Scales give total weight, not percent body fat, and can’t determine if that is healthy for you.
Body Composition 200 Q • Describe three critical roles fat plays in our health…
Body Composition 200 Answer • First, fat insulates the body and helps keep it at approximately 98.6 degrees. Second, it is used as a source of energy and storage for energy. Finally, it protects and cushions vital organs. Having too much or too little body fat can lead to serious health problems.
