  1. Civil War Battles Part Three of Three Standard 4.3 What would be the final conflict for the Civil War?

Battle of Gettysburg (July 1 – 3, 1863) • Day One • Confederates appeared to gain the upper hand, forcing Union forces back to Cemetery Hill. • Day Two • The entire Union army was in place, but Confederate took several key locations before federal forces to previous days position. • Day Three • When Union gun stopped firing, Confederates charged head on just as the artillery opened up again and tore apart the Confederate army.

  3. Battle of Gettysburg (July 1 – 3, 1863) • Lee was looking for supplies and trying to get the Union out of the south. • Three day battle and farthest battle north. • Considered the turning point of the Civil War • Lee never again invaded the north • Lincoln would later dedicate a portion of this site as a military cemetery.

  4. Battle of Vicksburg (May 18 – July 4, 1863) • Grant captured the last confederate stronghold on the MS river. • This would be the final achieving goal of cutting the confederacy in two.

  5. Sherman’s March (Between November/December 1864) • Total War – war in which to use all resources and population to completely destroy the oppressions. • Burned down everything in his path from Atlanta to Savannah, GA and up to Columbia, SC. • Would lead to Lincoln’s Re-election in 1864.

  6. Appomattox Court House (April 9, 1865) • Location of Lee’s final Surrender to Grant • Lincoln would choose to be lenient on the southern.
