Bloodiest single day battle in U.S. History • About 2,100 Unions soldiers and 2,700 Confederate died. • Another 18,500 equally divided were wounded. Antietam (April 25 – May 1, 1862)
Though a tie for victory….. • The battle was a strategic defeat for the Confederacy • Turning point in the war; kept Lee from directly threatening the northern industry and financial institutions. Antietam
