  2. Hurricanes • Hurricanes are also known as Tropical Cyclones, Typhoons, and Tropical Depressions • The center of the hurricane is called the eye • The eye of the hurricane is the calmest part • The eye wall is the strongest part

  3. Damage From Hurricanes • Hurricanes can cause fires on the surface of water, destroying buildings, massive flooding, power outages, hospitalize or even kill people • On average 23 people die in the U.S. from a hurricane every year

  4. Naming Hurricanes • A long time ago hurricanes only were named after women • Some names were retired if it was especially devastating • In 1890 Clement Wragge started naming hurricanes after politicians he didn’t like • In 1979 the national weather service started using male and female names for naming hurricanes

  5. Two Examples of Huricanes • Katrina- • Occurred on August 28, 2005 • More than 1,800 people lost their lives • Was recorded as the most destructive storm in terms of economic losses, it did not exceed the human losses • total losses of its devastation could top 100 billion dollars that they don’t have • Category 5

  6. Rita- • fifth major hurricane of the 2005 season • Occurred on September 17th, 2005 • Began as Category 2 and ended up at a Category 5 • Had wind gusts over 235mph • Strongest hurricane to date • storm caused a massive evacuation • 107 people died from accidents during the evacuation

  7. Measuring the strength of Hurricanes There are 5 categories • Category 1: winds 70-95 mph • Category 2: winds 96-110 mph • Category 3: winds 111- 130 mph • Category 4: winds 131-155 mph • Category 5: winds >156 mph
