Supplementary Authorizations • Two Types: • Introductory Subjects • Specific Subjects
Supplementary Authorizations • Introductory Subjects may be added to: • Single Subject, Standard Secondary, and Special Secondary Teaching Credentials (incl. University Interns) • Authorizes the holder to teach subject matter • curriculum typically included for grades 9 and below (students can be K-12) • Multiple Subject and Standard Elementary Teaching Credentials (incl. University Interns) • Authorizes the holder to teach grades 9 and below
Supplementary Authorizations • Specific Subjects can be added to: • Single Subject, Standard Secondary, and Special Secondary Teaching Credentials (incl. University Interns) • Authorizes the holder to teach the specific subject at any grade level K-12
Supplementary Authorization • Requirements • 20 semester units in subject area or • 10 upper-division semester units in subject area or • A college major from a regionally-accredited college in a subject directly related to the subject requested
Supplementary Authorization Coursework Requirements • Bachelor’s degree-applicable (non-remedial) • Earned at a C grade or higher • No education or education methodology classes • No Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or Professional Development Units (PDUs) • Must have at least one course in each of the specific areas. The balance of the 20 units may be any course within the requested subject category.

Subject Matter Authorizations Introductory and Specific Subject Matter Authorizations may be added to: • Single Subject Credentials • Multiple Subject Credentials • Standard Elementary & Secondary Credentials • University Internship Credentials (Multiple & Single) • Special Secondary Credentials in Academic Subjects only
Two Types: • Introductory & Specific Subject Matter Authorizations • Introductory Subjects – authorizes the holder to teach subject matter curriculum typically included for grades 9 and below (students can be K-12) • Specific Subjects – authorizes the holder to teach the specific subject at any grade level, K-12
Introductory Subject Matter Authorization Subjects Only available in the following subjects: • Art • English • Languages Other Than English • Mathematics • Music • Science • Social Science
Introductory Subject Matter Authorization Requirements • Degree major in subject • 32 semester units (or 48 quarter units) in subject • *Three semester units or four quarter units in each specific content area is required, except for Science which requires 6 semester units (or 9 quarter units) • All coursework must be completed at a regionally- accredited college or university with a grade of ‘C’ or better and be bachelor’s degree applicable or higher
Specific Subject Matter Authorization Requirements • BA or higher degree or 32 semester units (or 48 quarter units) in a subject directly related to specific authorization subject area • Authorization: • Authorizes the holder to teach the specific subject in grades preschool, K-12, and classes organized primarily for adults
Specific Subject Matter AuthorizationCoursework Requirements • Courses must be applicable towards a bachelor’s degree or higher and completed with a grade of “C” or better • Regarding the subject of History: BA or higher in History or Social Science OR 16 semester units in World History AND U.S. History

Converting a Supplementary Authorization to a Subject Matter Authorization • ISSUED PRIOR TO 1/01/05 - The new evaluation is based on prior completion of 20 semester units in the subject area; individuals will need 12 additional units to qualify • ISSUED ON OR AFTER 1/01/05 – for Supplementary Authorizations based on 10 upper-division units, individuals must submit an additional 22 semester units • Transcripts completed since the issuance date of the Supplementary Authorization will be required
Application Scenarios Wants Subject Matter Authorization but does not qualify “Subject Matter or Supplementary?” Applies for a Supplementary Authorization but qualifies for a Subject Matter Authorization If requirements are completed after the original submission date a new fee is required If the applicant returns the requested materials after the 60-day return date, a new fee is required
Application Scenarios Subject area requested is subsumed under the major listed on the basic teaching credential. This cannot be added as a Subject Matter Authorization. Examples: Dance to a Single Subject Credential in Physical Education Drama, Journalism, Speech, or Literature to a Single Subject Credential in English Photography to a Single Subject Credential in Art
Acceptable Coursework • Courses must be completed with grade of “C” or better (passing or satisfactory is acceptable) • Applicable toward a BA or higher degree • Taken at a regionally-accredited institution • Granted semester or quarter unit credit and posted to the transcript • From the subject department of the Subject Matter Authorization
