  3. Sobering Truth • Teen alcohol use kills about 6000 people each year, more than all illegal drugs combined. • Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens and one out of three of those is alcohol related.

  4. WHY?

  5. Alcohol consumption is socially accepted and often encouraged by the media. • Alcohol companies seem to glorify the drinking experience, depicting only happy, beautiful people having fun.

  6. Our society makes light of drinking. • It’s no wonder alcohol consumption among teens is on the rise. • Teens believe the LIE that alcohol consumption = a fun party!

  7. Mix these misconceptions about alcohol with young, inexperienced drivers, and the combination could be deadly.

  8. RealityCheck • Alcohol use impairs your judgment. • Peer pressure is the leading cause of teenage drinking. • Alcohol can cause major health problems, some of which include cirrhosis of the liver, heart failure, and impaired brain development. • High school students who use alcohol or other substances are five times more likely to drop out of school.

RealityCheck • Teen drivers are four times more likely to crash than older drivers. • Nighttime fatal crash rates for 16 year olds are nearly twice as high as daytime rates. • Crash risk goes up when teens drive with other teens in the car. • Every minute, one person is injured from an alcohol-related crash. • Kids who start drinking young are seven times more likely to be in an alcohol-related crash.
