Character Essay:The Five Pillars of Character • One 500 word essay • How do your years at Byron Nelson High School reflect The Five Pillars of Character? • Royal Shield (Integrity/Courage)- • Student who shows a steadfast adherence to a moral or ethical code and is capable of facing danger, fear, or vicissitudes with self-possession, confidence, and resolution • Noble Hand (Respect)– • Student who takes others’ feelings, needs, thoughts, ideas, wishes and preferences into consideration and gives them worth and value. Student who acknowledges others and accepts their individuality.

Essay, cont’d • Golden Key (Responsibility)- • Student who accepts and takes the necessary action to bring an assigned task to a successful conclusion. • Silver Arrow (Honesty)- • Student who is found to be trustworthy and upright through a sincere and straighforward way of life. • Regal Heart (Compassion)- Students who take into account the distress of others and attempt to alleviate their suffering through acts of kindness. He/She seeks to benefit others by reducing their suffering.

  5. Character References • Three letters of recommendation can come from any respected authority figure in your life. These can be teachers, club sponsors, coaches, community and church leaders, workplace managers • Reflections of you in regards to The Five Pillars of Character will be considered

  6. Activities(2nd criteria) • School • Community • Personal or other activities, especially those that reflect the five pillars of character

  7. Awards & AchievementsRecognition Examples may include… Learn (9th grade), Serve (10th Grade) and Lead (11th grade) award winners Officer in club or captain on team Lord Byron sportsmanship award Articles, papers that have won awards or have been published National Merit Finalists or other scholarship awards Peer leadership, i.e. homecoming court Promotion or recognition in the workplace Entrepreneurial success …but the possibilities are endless!

  8. GPA • Adjusted GPA for Pre-Ap, GT, and AP classes • As of Fall, 2011 Semester • Note – All students who feel they represent The Five Pillars of Character are encouraged to apply for this scholarship. GPA is only one consideration. Character achievements are more important considerations

PTSA Participation • Every year you have belonged to PTSA counts • Every PTSA committee you have served on and every PTSA volunteer opportunity you have participated in counts as well • The scholarship committee has room for student volunteers!
