Beauty Pageants Cassidy Heil Ms. Hawthorne 3H 19 January 2010
Introduction: STEP 1 • Girls who enter Beauty Pageants end up as little monsters who think highly of themselves and low of others. Some children encounter problems with school friends or siblings after participating in contests, because they think they are better then everyone else. These contests turn them into monsters. • PATHOS^
Introduction: STEP 2 A beauty pageant is a competition that is mostly based on someone's physical appearance. • There are several rounds in a typical beauty pageant, such as the Talent Round which is mostly based to a child's hobby consisting of a dance or something in particular they are good at. Also, the Evening Wear Round, which includes a child strutting down the runway in there fancy costumes. “Under a new law, Gaming Act 2006, anyone wishing to organize a game of chance including beauty contests, sales promotion, television reality shows and SMS quiz games will need to acquire authorization from the Gaming Commission first.” (Dadson) LOGOS^
Last Sentence in intro: STEP 3 • A law/rule should be made about the age it is legal to join a pageant because older kids know how to control themselves. • ETHOS^
BODY PARAGRAPH 1: STEP 1 Beauty Pageants deprive children of their childhood by forcing them to look and act like young adults. By trying to win they become bratty and vicious little girls. • They try to beat , out due each other by looking even more fake. Some girls, as they get older, who join pageants end up depressed, bulimic and anorexic, because they want to be prettier, skinnier, and better then the other contestants.
BODY PARAGRAPH 1:STEP 2 “Make-up, hair extensions, teased hairstyles, clouds of hairspray, flippers (fake teeth), sophisticated costumes, screaming crowds (mostly mothers), weird postures, twitched face expressions, tiaras, trophies, money and more or less talent are the ingredients for the usual children beauty pageants, along with exercised smiles and hysterical crying and outbursts.” (FunGuerialla.com) • PATHOS^
BODY PARAGRAPH 1: STEP 3 • First, by trying to win they will bug their guardian to get them something that nobody has so they are “better” then there opponents, like the fake teeth, fake eyelashes, and fake tans. A law should prevent this.
BODY PARAGRAPH 2: STEP 1 • Furthermore, if a child decides to do one contest she will most likely want to do more.
BODY PARAGRAPH 2:STEP 2 According to a pageant contestant, “After the event, I was hooked.” (Emory) Pathos^
BODY PARAGRAPH 2: STEP 3 Experience from others shows that it really is true. Beauty Pageants are addicting to ones who start.
TRANSITIONFROM ARGUMENT TO COUNTERARGUMENT • But some people may thing differently and disagree. • Parents think its actually good for there child!
BODY/COUNTERARGUMENT 1:Step 1 • Some may say that this is a harmless pastime that increases there self-esteem and confidence. • Parents like them to do it because it makes there daughter or son feel better about themselves. • There daughters look up to people on the television and want to be more like them and they feel these pageants help that. EXAMPLE:BARBIE. Look Similar?
BODY/COUNTERARGUMENT 1: STEP 2 • If the kids need someone to look up to it shouldn’t be a barbie doll.
BODY/COUNTERARGUMENT 2: Step 1 • Some kids say that it’s a chance to “bond” with their mother.
BODY/COUNTERARGUMENT 2: STEP 2 Bonding doesn’t mean joining a beauty pageant to get closer to your son or daughter. You can do other things to bond with your child, besides doing something that is demanding like beauty pageants. All of this is not the mothers fault, the child is usually the one who decides to do the pageants.
CONCLUSION: STEP 1 Kids should not join Beauty Pageants because it makes them monsters!! Beauty Pageants strip kids of their childhood by making them look and act like young adults.
CONCLUSION: STEP 2 By trying to win these pageants these girls become monstrous, rotten, and untamed. Girls in the Pageants do not stop at one pageant, they keep going!
CONCLUSION: STEP 3 • Parents should never mention beauty pageants to their child because it is a waste of money, it will take over there lives, and if they decide they want there child to stop she will most likely disagree. • Kim Emory from thecutekid.com says “I entered pageants when I was 14 years old, because another girl in my school said I could never win a pageant.” “After the event, I was hooked. I entered a series of modeling and natural pageant that same year winning the titles International Model of the Year, Miss Teen New England, and Miss Athena National all in a row.”
