  1. The Ugly Side of BeautyPageants

  2. Thesis • Beauty Pageants have a negative effect on women because they discriminate against certain people, affect the self-esteem of young girls with their unreachable standards, and persuade young girls to get cosmetic surgery.

  3. Discrimination (bp1) First way pageants discriminate: • Qualification guidelines-have to be “pretty”, younger than 25, at least 5’4” tall, less than 130 pounds, unmarried, resident of state for at least 6 months, and can’t have children.

  4. Discrimination 2 (bp1) Second way pageants discriminate: • Rules-strict dress code, bikinis are prohibited, girls can only wear one piece bathing suits, girls may not curse or use any kind of fowl language at all

  5. Discrimination 3 (bp1) Third way pageants discriminate: • Examples of girls being themselves-One contestant dressed as a cheerleader for one of her dances but the judges didn’t like her outfit and eliminated her immediately. Another girl did “the robot” on the runway and was disqualified.

  6. Self-esteem (bp2) First way pageants affect girls self-esteem: • Appearance of pageant contestants-girls use tricks to help them look better such as, wearing their hair up to make their bodies look longer, wearing glitzy outfits to get the judges attention, wearing skin tight dresses to show off their bodies, and wearing heels to make their legs look longer.

  7. Self-esteem 2 (bp2) Second way pageants affect girls self-esteem: • How other people and contestant’s affect girl’s self-esteem-Contestants will make up lies about other girls to hurt their confidence, they will also make fun of the each other behind their backs. Pageants force girls to think too much of themselves at such a young age.

  8. Self-esteem 3 (bp2) Third way pageants affect girls self-esteem: • Example of how girls are treated and act-A girls named Amanda won her first crown when she was 6 years old, but this was after she had already competed in over 70 pageants.

  9. Cosmetic Surgery (bp3) First way pageants persuade girls to get cosmetic surgery: • The types of surgeries girls have done: Girls will have excess body fat removed, breast augmentation, wrinkles reduced, and facial features altered such as their nose and lips.

  10. Cosmetic Surgery 2 (bp3) Second way pageants persuade girls to get cosmetic surgery: • What critics and other people say about girls having these surgeries done-Teens are vulnerable emotionally and physically and they are more likely to be affected by seeing a picture of a “beautiful” girl somewhere and a lot of girls will to desperate things to look that way.

  11. JonBenet Ramsey was murdered Christmas day in 1996 and was found buried in her basement wearing her crown and tiara.
