Internet Engineering Task Force • “the IETF is an open global community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers producing technical specifications for the evolution of the Internet architecture and the smooth operation of the Internet.” 1
What is SIP? • Session Initiation Protocol • SIP is a signaling protocol, widely used for setting up communications sessions such as: • A telephone call • Video conference • Skype • Instant messaging • Online gaming
4 Basic Tasks • Locating users and resolving their SIP address to an IP address • Negotiating capabilities and features among all session participants • Changing session parameters during the call • Managing the setup and teardown of calls for all users in the session http://www.ciscopress.com/articles/article.asp?p=664148
What is VoIP? • Voice over Internet Protocol • Voice communication is transmitted through the internet as data packets through fiber-optic lines rather than analog voice through copper phone wires.
SIP Trunking • SIP trunking is a broadband Internet link that utilizes SIP to connect different user endpoints through an Internet telephone service provider, replacing all traditional phone lines with VoIP
