Who was he? • Disciple of Giuseppe Mazzini, a politician, who founded the movement of young Italy. They worked for a united, republican Italian state. • leftist figure in the Risorgimento, an ideological movement that freed Italy from foreign dominance and united them politically. • Served three times as premier of Italy.
Strengths • Provided a fairly stable government by the tactics of transformism, which brought together members of different parties. • Introduced compulsory education between ages six and nine in 1877. • Abolished grist tax. • In 1882 the vote was extended to more than 600,000 new electors, 7 percent of the population could now cast a ballot.
Weaknesses • Although grist tax was abolished it was imperfectly enforced. • Little was done to improve the poorest citizens. • Using transformism meant he ignored party labels and took ministers from both the right and left. The Left’s soon split into two: the “purists” led by Crispi, and “moderates” led by Depretis.
