Overview –Energy in Israel • Israel’s main current sources of energy are: Coal (43%) and Gas (37%) • Israel wishes to advance to alternative resources (Its efforts were given a boost by the recent discovery of substantial offshore reserves of natural gas) • Renewable energy sources: only 0.1% of the total capacity.. • Today, the national grid can absorb only 5%-20% of its energy from renewable sources - due to its inability to tolerate fluctuation • ‘Israel Electric Corporation’ (IEC) is the sole supplier of all electrical • power in Israel • The political situation prevents interconnections with neighboring countries (harms future chances for large-scale exports of electricity within the region\to the EU)
Government Milestones • A Government resolution fromJanuary 2009: 10% of the total electricity generation will come from Renewable Energy by 2020 (6.43 TWh) • Interim target of 5% by 2014 • The total installed capacity is expected to reach 2.76 GW in 2020
