Complain, Complain, Complain! • In the 1830’s, British Merchants were selling Opium to the Chinese. A Chinese Official complained to Queen Victoria, saying: “I have heard that smoking Opium is strictly forbidden in your country. Why do you allow the evil to be sent elsewhere?”
China began to export more than it imported, making more money. (Balance of Trade) Other Countries had a (Trade Deficit),buying more from the Chinese than they sold to them.
THE OPIUM WAAAAAAAAAAAAR! • Too much of China’s money was being spent on opium, disrupting the economy. In 1839, Chinese warships clashed with merchants. (This Triggered the Opium War) With outdated weapons and methods, the Chinese were easily defeated.
In 1842, Britain made china sign and agree to a series of unfair treaties. The first in this series was the treaty of Nanjing. This treaty made China give up some of it’s islands, along with most of the Western power.
