WELCOME TO THE RENAISSANCE1450-1600 • THE WORD RENAISSANCE LITERALLY MEANS REBIRTH…A REBIRTH OF KNOWLEDGE…IT WAS A CULTURAL AND INTELLECTUAL MOVEMENT • PRINTING PRESS WAS INVENTED • CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS “DISCOVERED” AMERICA • MICHELANGELO PAINTED THE SISTINE CHAPEL • WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE WAS WRITING PLAYS
THE ART OF THE RENAISSANCE WAS DONE IN A REALISTIC STYLE - ARTISTS WERE INTERESTED IN IMITATING REAL LIFE OR HOW THINGS REALLY LOOK…THEY STUDIED PROPORTION, THE WORK OF GREEK AND ROMAN ARTISTS, THEY CREATED COLORS TO MIMIC WHAT THEY SAW IN LIFE, THEY WERE TRUE TO NATURE AND TO THE HUMAN FORM
Vitruvian Man LEONARDO DA VINCI’S VITRUVIAN MAN DA VINCI IS KNOWN FOR BEING A PAINTER, AN ARCHITECT, AN INVENTOR, A SCIENTIST, AND A TEACHER…HE IS FASCINATED BY THE BASIC PROPORTIONS OF THE HUMAN FORM
Womb by Leonardo da Vinci Taken from a page inside of da Vinci’s sketchbook
LEONARDO DA VINCI’SMONA LISA THIS PORTRAIT BECAME A TEMPLATE DURING THE RENAISSANCE FOR THE WAY A PORTRAIT SHOULD BE PAINTED THEY SAY THAT FOR A WOMAN TO HOLD THE CORNERS OF HER MOUTH JUST SLIGHTLY RAISED MEANT THAT SHE WAS ELEGANT AND PEOPLE HAVE WRITTEN FOR YEARS SINCE ABOUT MONA LISA’S ENIGMATIC SMILE
This painting is titled The Virgin of the Rocks – and both this, and the Mona Lisa are famous images from da Vinci – particularly for the use of a hazy light in the background – which is called sfumato in Italian
This drawing is titled Head of a Young Woman – and it is another example of the realistic style Da Vinci used
RAPHAEL – 1483-1520 MADONNA DELL GRANDUCA KNOWN FOR HIS MADONNAS…THERE ARE MANY OF THEM IN HIS BODY OF WORK AS WELL AS MANY OTHER LARGE FIGURE COMPOSITIONS…HIS PAINTING SKILLS ARE VERY APPARENT IN HIS DEVELOPMENT OF GLOWING, BEAUTIFUL SKIN
MICHELANGELO (1475-1564) IS FAMOUS FOR SEVERAL WORKS OF ART Holy Family and a detail of David
MICHELANGELO The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is one of the most famous Renaissance works in the world. It took Michelangelo years to paint it…upside down…on a scaffolding…with paint dripping into his face…
Judith Slaying Holofernesby Artemisia Gentileschi This painting is done by one of the VERY few females artists Post-Renaissance. Artemisia’s father was a well known artist, and he recognized that his eldest daughter also had the gift. Her mother passed away when she was only 12, so her father began tutoring her in the arts. She had a difficult time in the male dominated field of art, but continued to create works based on Biblical stories, and some of which reflected her own life.
IMPRESSIONISM1860-1890 • THIS STYLE OF ART CAPTURES THE IMAGE AS SOMEONE WOULD SEE IT IF THEY JUST CAUGHT A GLIMPSE… • ATTEMPTING TO CAPTURE LIGHT • LOTS OF COLOR USE • OUTDOOR SCENES • LOTS OF BRUSHWORK • WITHOUT ALL DETAILS • EXECUTION OF PAINTING IS QUICK
Mary Cassatt Mother and Child against a Green Background (Maternity)
Mary Cassatt Little Girl in a Blue Armchair
POST IMPRESSIONISMLATE 1880S-1910 • THESE ARTISTS BROKE AWAY FROM THE GROUP MENTALITY OF THE IMPRESSIONIST ARTISTS OF THEIR TIME • THEY DEVELOPED THEIR OWN SPECIFIC STYLISTIC QUALITIES IN THEIR WORK
Georges Seurat The Eiffel Tower
Georges Seurat The Circus 1890-91
Expressionism • 1890’s • Art that emphasizes the extreme expressive properties of the visual arts in order to explore emotions and inner truths. • Expressionism distorted radically for emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas. Expressionist artists sought to express meaning or emotional experience rather than physical reality • The Expressionist emphasis on individual perspective • communicate a specific meaning almost immediately to almost every viewer.
Edvard Munch • The Scream is interpreted as representing the universal anxiety of modern man. • He used thick brush stokes and muted colors to portray the anxiety and emotion he felt. • The 1895 pastel sold at auction on 2 May 2012 for US$119,922,500
CUBISM 1908-1920 • DURING THIS PERIOD, THERE WERE SEVERAL AMAZING INVENTIONS, SUCH AS: • PHOTOGRAPHY • CINEMATOGRAPHY • SOUND RECORDING • THE TELEPHONE • MOTOR CARS • AIRPLANES
SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF CUBISM CHALLENGED CONVENTIONAL FORMS OF REPRESENTATION…IT WAS A NEW WAY OF SEEING WHICH REFLECTED THE “MODERN AGE” YOUR SIGHT OF AN OBJECT IS THE SUM OF MANY DIFFERENT VIEWS AND MEMORY OF AN OBJECT IS NOT CONSTRUCTED FROM JUST ONE ANGLE, BUT FROM MANY ANGLES DEPICTS PEOPLE, PLACES OR OBJECTS – BUT NOT FROM A FIXED VIEWPOINT MANY PARTS OF OBJECTS ARE SHOWN AT ONE TIME
More characteristics of CUBISM • Tried to show all sides of 3 dimensional objects • Broke objects into shapes and then reassembled the shapes into a composition • Can’t be sure of what shape is in front of another • Spatial ambiguity
WHO ARE THE THREE MUSKETEERS OF CUBISM? • GEORGE BRAQUE • PABLO PICASSO • JUAN GRIS
MAN WITH A GUITAR BY GEORGES BRAQUE WHAT DO YOU SEE IN THIS IMAGE? ARE THERE ANY RECOGNIZABLE SECTIONS OR PARTS OF THINGS THAT YOU CAN MAKE OUT?
VIOLIN AND GLASS BY JUAN GRIS IN THIS PAINTING, WHAT PARTS OF A VIOLIN DO YOU SEE? WHAT PARTS OF A GLASS CAN YOU FIND?
