Military Working Dog (MWD) Capabilities and Your Injury Risk 341st Training Squadron Lackland AFB Texas
Background • MWDs trained to military standards • Obedience, building search, scouting, detection and controlled aggression (attack) • MWDs are considered a weapon • Years of positive reinforcement has strengthened trained skills • Those adopting MWDs assume liability for all property/injury claims and veterinary care
Basic Obedience Commands • Heel: trained to walk on left side of handler • Sit: trained to sit on command • Down: trained to lie down on command • Stay: trained to stay on command • Hup: trained to jump over/through obstacles
Additional Police Skills • Building Search: trained to locate a person in a building • responds by barking, biting, or a stop & stare • Scouting: trained to locate a person by airborne scent, sound or vision • responds by barking, biting, or a stop & stare • Controlled Aggression: basic police attack training to pursue, attack (bite) and hold a suspect • positive reinforcement for courageous and fearless attitude when pursuing, defending or attacking
Training Standards • Controlled Aggression • A dog’s natural tendency is to chase and bite • Trained to attack with words “Get Him” • Trained to pursue, bite, and hold • Trained to release bite with word “Out” sometimes requiring physical assistance • Trained to automatically re-attack if handler is threatened without any words from handler • Sudden movements, loud confrontations or fighting stimulates dog’s aggressive tendency • MWD may attack if feels threatened
Caution-Military Working Dog • NEVER use words “GET HIM” • Use caution with horse play, sudden movements, shaking hands, back slaps, etc. • Should not be off leash in open areas • Use caution around persons jogging/running • Dog may become attached or protective of one individual, vehicles, food bowl, play toys or territory
Dog Bites – Injury Risk • MWDs trained to bite can be dangerous • MWDs are considered a weapon • Years of biting human decoys and praise has strengthened attack skills • The following photos are extremely graphic and show the damage a MWD can cause an individual, even one who regularly works around these animals
