  3. Middle and High School Grid

  4. Composition of released FCAT Test (8th & 10th Grade) • 32% of questions were gridded response for 10th grade • 28% of questions were gridded response for 8th grade

  5. Answer boxes Fraction bar Decimal point Number bubbles Parts of a Response Grid

  6. How to Complete the Response Grid • Work the problem and find the answer. • Write your answer in the answer boxes at the top of the grid. • Print your answer with the first digit in the left answer box. Do NOT leave a blank answer box in the middle of an answer. • Be sure to write a decimal point or fraction bar in the answer box if it is a part of the answer.

  7. How to Complete the Response Grids • Fill in a bubble under each box in which you wrote your answer. • Fill in one and ONLY one bubble for each box. • Do NOT fill in a bubble under an unused box. • Fill each bubble by making a solid black mark • that completely fills the circle. • You MUST fill in the bubbles accurately to receive credit for your answer.

  8. Examples

  9. 27 + 33 = 60 6 6 0 0 OR Gridding a Whole Number

  10. . 0 .8 7 5 8 7 5 or Gridding a Decimal

  11. 3 / 5 Gridding a Fraction

  12. You can NOT write a mixed number in an answer grid. If your answer is a mixed number y you must convert it to: Ex: . 4 2 9 / 7 2 5 1 7 4 What to do with a mixed number... Improper Fraction Decimal

  13. INCORRECT Be aware…………………… 7 1 / 4

  14. 1 2 . 5 Percent Problems If the question asks ‘what is the percent’, grid in the answer without moving the decimal point. Lisa bought lunch for her friends. The cost of the lunch was $64.00 including tax. Lisa wants to leave a $8.00 tip. What percent tip did Lisa leave? Set up a proportion: x = 8.00 100 64.00 Solve 64x = 800 x = 12.5 Because the problem asked for what percent, just grid the answer 12.5 DO NOT move the Decimal to .125

  15. INCORRECT INCORRECT . 9 1 9 0 0 9 / 0 Gridding Percents What percent of 100 is 9? Answer: 9%

  16. Incorrect Gridding Repeating Decimals…….. Answer: 5.3333333. . . Correct 5 . 3 5 . 3 3 3

  17. Grid the answer 4.666666. . . 4 . 6 6 6 4 . 6 6 7 OR

  18. Reducing and Rounding Issues Reducing--- We recommend: Do not reduce fractions UNLESS the directions tell you to reduce to lowest terms OR if the answer doesn’t fit in the grid unless you reduce it. Rounding--- We recommend: Don’t round UNLESS the directions tell you to do so.

  19. Examples of Common Gridding Mistakes

  20. 6 3 / 5 3 6 5 Can you find the error? The answer is

  21. 4 2 0 5 Can you find the error? The answer is 25.04

  22. 3 1 8 The answer is 318 Can you find the error?

  23. 12.5 1 2 . 5 The answer is Do you see the mistake?

  24. 4 3 The answer is 43% Do you see the mistake?

  25. 4 5 The answer is 54 Do you see the error?

  26. . 3 7 What’s wrong? The answer is 3.66666666

  27. What’s wrong? 2 / 3 1 8 The answer is

  28. Common Gridding Mistakes • Adding extra zeros • Bubbling more than one number in a column • Adding unnecessary spaces • Forgetting to bubble • Omitting the decimal point • Gridding improper fractions incorrectly • Gridding percents incorrectly • Adding extra symbols outside/inside of the grid

  29. Now it’s your turn

  30. Grid the following answers:(Solve first when necessary) • 601 2. 0.03 3. 8/3 4. 3.65 • 5. 5¼ 6. 7 – 2.3 7. 8.66666 8. What is 20% of 80 • 6 + 3 x 5 10. 7.333333 11. 31/3 12. 2⅜ • 13. 40 is what percent of 160? 14. 18 is what percent of 125? • Round your answer to the • nearest whole percent. • 15. 18 ÷ 55 Round your answer to the nearest hundredth.
