  1. Safety

  2. General Guidelines • When first entering a science classroom, do not touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials in the laboratory area until you are instructed to do so. • Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in the lab. Never use lab glassware as a food or beverage container.

  3. General Guidelines • Never fool around in the lab. Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks are dangerous and prohibited. • Students are never permitted in the science storage rooms or prep rooms unless given specific permission by their teacher.

  4. Accidents and Injuries • Report any accident (spill, breakage, etc.) or injury (cut, burn, etc..) to the teacher immediately, no matter how trivial it may appear. • If you or your lab partner is hurt, immediately get the teacher’s attention. • If a chemical should splash in your eye(s) or on your skin, immediately flush with running water from the eyewash station or safety shower for at least 20 minutes. Notify the teacher immediately.

  5. Handling Chemicals • All chemicals in the lab are to be considered dangerous. Do not touch, taste, or smell any chemicals unless specifically instructed to do so. The proper technique for smelling chemical fumes will be demonstrated to you. • Never remove chemicals or any other materials used for experimentation from the laboratory area, unless specifically instructed to do so by your teacher. • Take great car when transferring chemicals or other experimental supplies from one part of the lab to another. Hold them securely and walk carefully.

  6. Handling Glassware and Equipment • Never handle broken glass with your bare hands. Notify your teacher and use a brush and dustpan to clean up broken glass. Broken or waste glassware is to be placed in the designated glass disposal container. • When removing an electrical plug from its socket, grasp the plug, not the electrical cord. Hands must be completely dry before touching an electrical switch, plug, or outlet. • If you do not understand how to use a piece of equipment, ask the teacher for help.

  7. Heating Substances • Never leave unattended anything that is being heated or is visibly reacting. Always turn the burner or hot plate off when not in use or when you leave the area. • Heated metals and glass remain very hot for a long time. They should be set aside to cool and picked up with caution. Use tongs or heat-protective gloves if necessary.

  8. Safety Equipment • Eyewash station and shower • Fire Blanket • First Aid Kit • Exits
