Objectives • Discuss the use of computer based learning for ACLS & BLS • Identify advantages and barriers for on-line education for healthcare staff • Evaluate learners’ response to on-line method of education • Future plans for expansion of on-line programs
Considerations for BLS • Large number of staff need BLS training • Multiple 3 hour courses per month/12 months a year • 2-3 BLS Instructors needed • Coverage for staff while in course • Just-in-time training for expiring cards
HeartCode BLS • Assigned through HealthStream LMS • Cognitive portion available 24 hours • Skills either per computer or live skills check in fifteen minute sessions
HeartCode BLS • Average time of completion Cognitive & skills 1-2 hours. • Automatic tracking and reporting through full function LMS • Consistent presentation of educational content
SAMC Experience • Able to decrease Healthcare provider courses to one per month first six months of year after implementation of HC BLS • Elimination of live courses January 2010 • End user satisfaction with course • Manager satisfaction with course
Process • Register with Education staff • HC BLS assigned to “My Learning” page in LMS • Part 1 cognitive portion can be completed at any computer work or home • Part 2 completed via live skills session in 15 minutes or • Via computer assisted manikin when skills sessions not scheduled
Process continued • AHA BLS card given after completion of skills • BLS completion immediately on transcript in LMS • BLS completion available to managers via reports in LMS

Comments from staff Positive Negative Not enough explanation on how to move through scenarios I am not computer savvy I’d rather have hands-on and a real person explaining this stuff • Allows easy completion with time restrictions • Able to complete at your convenience • Like working at own pace • Don’t have to go to class • Usually don’t have 3 hours to be away from my job

Comments Positive Negative Program too long Frustrating when the computer mouse is too sensitive Program was unrealistic. As a member of a team you depend on each other. • This was awesome! I will definitely continue to renew on-line!!! • This program helped me learn the algorithms better than classroom courses • Enjoyed this course setting
