Roald’s Childhood • He was born in Llandaff, South Wales. On September 13th 1916. • His parents names were Harold and Sophie. They were Norwegian. • He went to Repton school in Derbyshire, and left school in 1933. It was very unpleasant for him. • He was named after the polar explorer Roald Amundsen. • He and 4 other friends were kicked out of school after putting a dead mouse in a sweet jar. It was called The Great Mouse Plot of 1923. This was Dahl’s idea.
Tragedy • When Roald Dahl was 3 his sister, Astri died from appendicitis. A few months later his father died from pneumonia at the age of 57.Mr. Dahl’s daughter Olivia died at the age of 7 from measles encephalitis.
Jobs • His first job was in Africa, with the shell oil company. • In world war 2 he was a fighter pilot. He was badly injured because his plane crashed. • His final job was working in America, and soon started publishing books.
Publishing • His very first book, written in 1943 was called The Gremlins. • Eleanor Roosevelt invited him to the White House and became friends with Franklin D Roosevelt. • The second book he wrote was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

He married actress award-winning Patricia Neal on July 2. They were married for 30 years and had 5 children. Their names were Lucy, Ophelia, Theo, Tessa, and Olivia. MARRIAGE

Freaky Facts • The BFG is wearing Dahl’s shoes. When Roald Dahl wrote the book he said the BFG was wearing boots. The illustrator Question Blake asked if the boots could change because they were boring. • Dahl’s wife Felcity were brought up in the same neighborhood, Cardiff. • Dahl helped invent a little valve that is used to drain fluid from the brain.
R.I.P Mr.Dahl • Roald Dahl died in November 1990 at the age of 74, of a rare blood disease. It is called myelodysplastic anaemia in his home. • He was buried in the cematery at the parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
Roald Dahl Day • The anniversary of Dahl’s birthday on Sept. 13, has recently become widely celebrated as Roald Dahl Day. On Sept. 2007 Google honoured the day by a reworking of it’s famous logo on its main search page. Google replaced some of the letters with items and characters from books.
