Introduction • The Jewish religion is old, dating back to the Hebrews in Israel. • The Jewish have one god. Jehova. • The Jewish religion is found all over the world.
Basic Beliefs • The Jews believe in one god who will either reward them or punish them for their sins when they reach death. • They believe that their god gave them Israel. • When the world ends they believe that the god will send a Messiah, to save the Jewish people. • According to them it was god who revealed himself at Mount Sinai, and that he stated the Jewish commandments.
Places of Worship • A Synagogue is the formal place of worship including its other names, the Hebrew beitk’nesset and the shul • The Rabbi is a religious teacher who makes decisions based on Jewish law. The rabbi specializes in translating/reading Hebrew. • The chazzan is the person who leads the prayers.
The torah • The torah is a set of rules, stories, and religious guidelines • The torah is in Hebrew and kept in the “holy cabinet” as it is the most important item in the synagogue. • It is handwritten on animal skin. • It hold the five books of Moses; Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy
The ten commandments 1.Belif in one god. 2. Prohibition of improper worship. 3. Prohibition of oaths. 4. Observance of sacred times. 5. Respect for parents and teachers. 6. Prohibition of physically harming a person. 7. Prohibition of sexual Immortality. 8.Prohibition of harming a person through speech. 9.Prohibition of theft. 10. Prohibition of coveting.
Challenges • The Jewish have a particularly challenged past including numerous mass population moves. • The holocaust, were million of Jews were slain, forced into concentration camps, or forced to flee, is the most famous example. • The holocaust happened in Europe during World War two. • The Jewish were often fed to lions during Roman times.
Rituals • Bar Mitzvah: When a boy has turned thirteen and is obligated to serve all ten Jewish commandments. He is now to study the torah and is honored with a celebration. • Bat Mitzvah: the female equivalent to a bar Mitzvah
Holidays • The Sabbath is Saturday, on which Jews are forbidden to work. • Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year. • Hanukkah, the most famous holiday, is not Christmas it predates Christmas, and is of coincidental timing. • The days of Awe are ten days from Rosh Hashanah to Yom kipper. They are days of relaxation and worship, some Jewish spend all ten days at the synagogue. • Yom Kipper, the Jewish day of atonement. Jewish people often fast around this time.
