Sessions Aims and Objectives. To review the arrangements for Saturday and occasional courts to ensure: • staffing provision is appropriate; • appropriate resources are available; and therefore • a reduction in unnecessary custodial/secure remands through Saturday and occasional courts.
Outline of current provision • How does the YOT find out who is in court? • Who is representing the YOT in court? • What resources are available to them? • What are the management arrangements?
Exercise Split into …. Groups. • Review the current Saturday and occasional court provision, thinking particularly about: • Staffing • Management oversight • Access to resources • Be prepared to feedback your findings with the rest of the group.
Case Management Guidance • Notification system that allows enough time for assessment to be made. • Experienced/trained staff in place to carry out the assessment and to be present in court. • Resources available to inform the assessment i.e. access to the YOT MIS for the worker. • Resources available so the worker can meaningfully address the courts concerns e.g. access to accommodation etc. • Management over sight on the day.
Exercise Split into …. Groups. Take one of the models of covering Saturday and occasional courts and: • Discuss the advantages • Discuss the disadvantages • Discuss how it would work in ………. Be prepared to feedback your findings with the rest of the group.
Next Steps • Identify the most appropriate model for your YOT. • Construct a business case and get approval for the model. • Build the model in the YOT: • Volunteers; • Resources; • Court awareness. • Set a date to implement the model.
