  1. Illiamna R. Bridge replacement on Williamsport to Pile Bay Road Washed out bridge, Chinkelyes Creek Williamsport-Pile Bay Road (Replaced by Bailey Bridge in 2002)

  2. Williamsport to Pile Bay Homer Illiamna Region

  3. Immediate needs on Williamsport to Pile Bay • Replace Illiamna River bridge, single-lane truss • Weight limits on bridge • Width and height limits on bridge • Other immediate work • Rock cuts on pass that limit width of loads.

  4. Williamsport to Pile Bay Road • State-owned, state-supported maintenance • Pioneer road standard, 15.5 miles length • US Army COE and state analysis show significant demand for vessel and freight movement • Primary purpose: move freight and fuel, not general traffic

  5. Iliamna River Four Mile Creek Timberline Creek Chinkelyes Creek

  6. Williamsport to Pile Bay Road Benefits • Allows gillnetters to transport vessels • Provides Illiamna Lake communities with access and connectivity back to Homer • Strong support for road • Kenai Peninsula, Homer, Lake and Peninsula Borough, Alaska Miner’s Association • Significant freight movement benefits. • Alternative to Kvichak R. low water problems

  7. Bridges repaired in 2000 Four Mile Creek Timberline Creek

  8. Bridge upgrade in 2002 Chinkelyes Creek Joint project: Alaska DOT and US Navy SeabeesEstimated cost $200,000 + contributed labor

  9. Chinkelyes Ck. Bailey Double-Double HS-20constructed Summer 2002 by DOT&PF and US Navy

  10. Other considerations • Route has two other limitations: • Marine access is higher-tide limited, 3-4 days per month • Lake access is ice-limited • DOT&PF cost-benefit analysis found >$3M annual freight delivery savings despite these limitations • Wilder Construction plans on dredging the marine side in 2003, adding available tidal days to above

  11. Budget • Replace bridge on Illiamna R. including new sheet pile abutments $0.75M • Optional: Selective rock cut on mountain pass to widen key locations: $0.75M
