The BINGBOT SERIES
Bing is one of the many search engines that internet has. And just like Google, Bing has its Webmaster tools to utilise for SEO. When it comes to efficiency, web crawling is one of the significant things to look out. Quick recall! Previously, I discussed some tips to avoid website redesign mistakes. Part of the website designing tips I mentioned is about checking for crawl errors after migrating a page between its live and developmental stage. As you can see, web crawlers are vital factors to and considered part of basic SEO tactics. How does BingBot affect me? Web crawlers are one of the many webmaster tools that search engines use to make sure any site maintenance or pages with an issue gets addressed. Aside from website performance, web crawling is done once in a while to keep your page’s good ranking. Google has its Googlebot, while Bing has BingBot. They are named so because they are robots responsible for ensuring that your pages rank well by identifying fresh content for each site.
However, BingBot’s crawl efficiency reduced. According to feedback, Bing hasn’t been crawling well enough updated contents. On the other hand, if it does, it goes on too much and causes constraints on the website’s resources. So they asked for feedback and recommendations from users. Fabrice Canel, principal program manager for Bing Webmaster Tools, did a talk at the SMX Advanced last June and asked the audience for suggestions and feedback. What followed is an update on what his team has been working on to improve BingBot’s efficiency. He shared on a blog post that the team already made numerous improvements. Part of BingBot’s goal is to use an algorithm that will help determine which sites to crawl, how often, and how many pages to fetch from each website (Canel, 2018). This process is done to make sure that the crawler doesn’t overload the site servers. Therefore, BingBot aims to limit its “crawl footprint” on a site, while keeping its index content as fresh as possible.
BingBot listened to the SEO and webmaster community and is actively working on balancing crawl efficiency. The reason why this affects you or any other web content creators is that if you add new content to your website and Bing doesn’t see it because of its present issues; it won’t rank. That means Bing users or searchers will not find your content because of its low rank. You might notice Bing has gone slower these days, and the possible cause for that is they are working on improvements with indexing and crawling. Just leave it for now.
