HABITAT • Where- Rainforests of west and central Africa • Biome – Savannahs in 37 countries south of Sahara Desert • Elephant habit endanger as it is getting hotter – so less water for them
APPEARANCE • Length: 30 feet long trunk to thing tail • Height: 5 to 14 feet at the shoulder • Females smaller than males • Weigh 6,000 to 15,000 pounds • Trunks are made of muscles – no bones – can pick up even very tiny things
EATING HABITS • Herbivore • Plants such as fruit, tubers, bark and bamboo • May eat bananas and sugar cane • Eat 300-400 pounds of food a day • Get their food by taking it from trees or bushes
BEHAVIOR AND OTHER INTERESTING TRAITS • 1 calf at a time (twins rare) • The whole herd takes care of the babies • They’re pregnant for almost 2 years • Babies can’t use their trunks very well • Live in herds of 8-100 • Females lead the herd
