Appearance • Elephants have fur on them. • The elephant is big and has a gray body. • Elephants have a long gray trunk.
Habitat • An elephant can live in more than one habitat. • Some elephants like to live on grassy plains that are called savannas. • They also live in deserts and rain forests.
Movement • Elephants walk eight miles per hour. • A fast elephant runs twenty-five miles per hour. • Elephants are able to run faster than humans.
Babies • A baby elephant is called a calf. • A baby uses his trunk to find food. • Baby elephants drink milk from their mother.
What they eat • Elephants have to eat almost 400 pounds of food each day. • Elephants eat tender grass. • Leaves, fruit, bark, and wood are some of the elephant’s food. • They also eat hay.
Interesting Facts • Some elephants weigh 15,000 pounds. • Adult elephants need twenty gallons of water per day. • The oldest female is the leader. • When the leader starts walking the others start to walk. • They tell each other how they feel by touching each other with their trunks.
