Transportation • As mentioned in subtopic 3, the Philippines is a very mountainous area. • So to make due of this, the best way to get to a place that is in short distance around the city is by Jeepney or Tricycle. (if you do not own a personal vehicle) • Although in some areas of Luzon, the best way to get around is by elevated railway. What's a better way than over?
Transportation • The theory on how Philippines was made is from a volcanic nature, meaning a separation of islands. So what do you do when you need to get across them? • If you are planning on traveling from island to island, the most efficient and most comfortable way to get there is by plane at one of the 266 gateways available. • But, if you are one of those low class citizens without enough money for a plane, the other option is by a slow moving boat.
Clothing • Clothing in the Philippines is all based on their climate. Also because of the fact that they were a former colony of the United States of America. • Year round, it is hot and humid wherever you go. So in the Philippines, during the hot season you would normally see the children frolicking around in shorts, a t-shirt and tsinelas. At school, it is mandatory that you are in a standard uniform.
Food • Although Philippines is a mix of western and oriental , the Filipinos still enjoy their Asian lifestyle. The main “staple” food of the Philippines is rice. • The reason is because they have the right climate for growing rice (hot + rainy). And has enough fertile land to make miles of crops. • But in some areas of the Philippines, the climate is not suitable for the growth of rice, so they resort to maize (corn) as a staple food.
Food • Rice is also enjoyed with other things such as fish & other seafood, chicken pork and goat ( if they are a descendant of the Muslim religion) • For dessert, the Filipinos enjoy frozen treats and goodies. One example is Halo-Halo, meaning mix-mix. It is called this because there are a mix of fruit, corn, beans, variant flavors of ice-cream and other things that can be grown in the climate they live in.
Glossary • Jeepney: a form of transportation similar to a bus started and created in the Philippines • Trycycle: a motorcycle with an attached side car which can hold 5 people normally • Luzon: Philippines richest and most sophisticated island • Halo-Halo: a popular dessert served after meals. • Tsinelas: The Filipino word for Flip-flops or sandals
