Our Method • Found data of the rates of teenage pregnancies for all 50 states • Randomly selected 20 states to include in our data by: • Putting them all on a list on the calculator • Using the MATH then PRE options and choosing the RandInt option. This randomly selected our twenty states for us with no possible bias. • We analyzed our data and found individual confidence intervals by putting each value from our data into a list on the calculator and using the VARS option to find our mean and standard deviation. From there we could create our confidence intervals. • Made valid conclusions and related it to the real world.

Teen Pregnancy • We chose this topic because it is a popular and controversial topic right now. • We were interested in seeing how teen pregnancy varies by state. • We wanted to know which states had the most teen pregnancies and which states had the least. • We were interested in finding out what Pennsylvania ranked in teen pregnancies (it is ranked at number 12 with 50 being the state with the highest number of pregnancies).

  4. Confidence Intervals • Confidence Level: 90% • Confidence Interval: (36.9,49.28) • Confidence Level: 92% • Confidence Interval: (36.6, 49.72) • Confidence Level: 95% • Confidence Interval: (35.27,50.61) • Confidence Level: 98% • Confidence Interval: (33.63, 52.25)

  5. Confidence intervals tell us which values are likely in this survey. They help us generalize our results so we can make a valid conclusion regarding our data. It also helps us to relate our data to the real world. • With this in mind, we can be 95% confident that the mean of teens pregnant (between the ages of 15 and 18) per every 1,000 girls surveyed in twenty randomly selected states is between 35.27 and 50.61.

  6. Our data then tells us which states have the highest number of teen pregnancies and the mean number of teenage pregnancies in America.

  7. Possible Problems • Only 20 out of the 50 states were chosen to represent our confidence interval • Many girls may have refused to participate, which may lead to unreliable results • Some girls may not consider having an abortion a pregnancy while others do which could throw off results • We do not know the methods in which our data was obtained so therefore we don’t know if they used reliable methods

  8. Summary • Interesting Results: • A majority of the states with the highest teen pregnancy rates were Southern states. For example, three of the highest pregnancy rates were in Texas (64.2), Georgia (4.9), and Mississippi (71.9). • Our upper level of our confidence interval was 50. 61. Eight out of the 20 selected states had pregnancy rates higher than that parameter.
