  3. What is a hypothesis? • A hypothesis is an “if” and “then” statement at the beginning of the lab stating the question the lab is designed to answer. • Example: If I eat lots of chocolate, then I will get zits.

  4. What is a hypothesis? • A hypothesis contains two variables. One is "independent" and the other is "dependent." • Hypothesis format: • Write the word ‘IF’ • State the independent variable • Write the word ‘THEN’ • State the dependent variable

  5. Variables Independent Variable: • This is what is given in the lab. • It has been pre-decided by the lab design. • Example: getting zits Dependent variable: • This is what is being measured in the lab. • It depends on the independent variable. • Example: number of chocolates.

  6. Let’s Practice: An old wives tail states that drinking more milk will make you grow taller. Marge told Lisa that she would grow twice as tall as Bart if she were to drink twice as much milk as Bart.

  7. Let’s Practice: Hypothesis: If Lisa drinks twice as much milk as Bart, then she will grow twice as tall as Bart. • Independent Variable: amount of milk • Dependent Variable: Lisa’s height/growth

  8. Examples of Labs/Activities We Did: • Corn Lab • Purpose: Effects of gravitropism on plants • Bacterial Growth • Purpose: Determine which location has most bacterial growth • Woolyboogers • Purpose: Which woolybooger will survive the most

Examples of Labs/Activities We Did: • Corn Lab: If auxin shows positive effect on gravitopism for the corn seedlings then all the roots will grow downwards • Bacterial Collection: If an area is in constant contact with humans like the classroom door handle, then the classroom door handle will have the most amount of bacterial growth/colonies when put on agar. • Woolyboogers: If the beak of a woolybooger is in the shape of a spoon then it will be able to pick up the most food and survive the best.

  10. Practice writing hypothesis for each of the statements below: • Salt in soil may affect plant growth. • Plant growth may be affected by the color of the light. • Bacterial growth may be affected by temperature. • Sunlight may cause skin cancer. • Temperature may cause leaves to change color.

Conclusions: Always written as a 3-step statement … • The hypothesis stated ____ re-state hypothesis (copy your hypothesis) • The observations showed _____ talk about results and how they relate to hypothesis, talk about inferences, etc • Therefore, the hypothesis was ____ accepted or rejected
