Management Board Meeting, Progress Report

This report provides updates on research and development activities related to structural optimisation in offshore renewable energy installations. Key topics include software development, embedded sensors, numerical modeling, and mechanics of inter-array cables. The report outlines progress made to date and plans for the next three months in each work package. It also addresses recruitment efforts, resource allocation, and collaborations with industry partners. Risks, opportunities, and funding sources are discussed, highlighting the project's impact and future prospects.

Recruitment process started • WP4.2 Embedded Sensors • PDRA1 – Composite Manufacturing, Waseem Tahir, started 31/10/18 • PDRA2 – Fibre optic sensing systems, Tom Allsop, Starting 15/4/19 • WP4.3Numerical modelling of drag anchors for cable risk assessment • Still actively looking for a student - any help with this would be appreciated • WP4.4- Mechanics of lightweight inter-array cables for offshore renewable installations • PhD Student, Giuliano Pretti, starting 1st February 2019 • Additional resources: • 1 Year PDRA looking at embedded sensors for wind and tidal turbines - Interviewing 6/2/19. funded through Supergen ORE Hub • PhD Studentship on distributed sensors for structural health monitoring of large offshore structures, closing date 23/1/19, start October 2019. Funded by UoH as part of Supergen Recruitment

  3. WP4.1 • Progress to date: • Induction and initial familiarisation with Vox-FE • Year 1 • Familiarisation with VOX-FE. • Upgrading VOX-FE for the latest libraries and OS, and porting to VIPER (HPC). • Setting up a matching development and test PC in Engineering. • Setting up proper version control, documentation and automated benchmark/test facility. • Selection of relevant benchmark models, and familiarisation with ANSYS for benchmark validation modelling. • Developing and validating protocols to import blade geometries into VOX-FE • Years 2 and 3 • Scaling up of model sizes and optimization of parallel processing. • Application of VOX-FE to relevant problems. • Implementation and validation of adaptive remodelling. • Implementation and validation of orthotropic and anisotropic properties. Progress against tasks for each Work Package and plan for next 3 months

  4. WP4.2 • Progress to date: • Familiarisation with blade manufacturing process inc. visit to Hull factory • Identification of lab scale composite manufacturing facilities (funded from separate source) • Literature review of composite manufacturing monitoring • Refining workplan based on discussion with Hull factory staff • Plans for next 3 months: • Procure and commission manufacturing kit • Identify and procure initial fibre sensors system components • Plan initial composites trials • Discuss work plan with SGRE Hull & Aalborg and UoS (WP2.3) • Balance between monitoring of blade manufacture and operation • Identify SGRE support – materials, data etc. • Attend Advances in Rotor Blades for Wind Turbines conference, Bremen Progress against tasks for each Work Package and plan for next 3 months

  5. WP4.3 Student not yet appointed – continue recruitment effort • WP4.4 Plans for the next 3 months: • Undertake a literature review of existing techniques for assessment of the deployment of drag anchors and long-term capacity/breakout potential of anchors for a variety of soil conditions. • Understand Durham’s in-house material point method code. • Start to extend existing material point method code to include dynamic effects. Progress against tasks for each Work Package and plan for next 3 months

  6. Risks: • Recruitment of WP4.1 PDRA and WP4.3 student • Opportunities: • Interaction with ‘Reliablade’ project – DTU, IWES Fraunhoffer, SGRE etc • Interaction with AMRC composites experts Risks and Opportunities

  7. Further Funding – Supergen, Green Port Growth Programme and UoH funding of staff and facilities Outcomes and Outputs
