Background for Understanding: • Born in Georgia in 1944 • Scarred and nearly blinded as a child • Valedictorian; Spellman in Atlanta • Graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in New York • Worked in the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi • National recognition for The Color Purple (Pulitzer Prize)
Literary Focus: • Motivation – what drives a character to do what he/she does. • Explains characters’ thoughts, feelings, actions, speech • May be internal or external
Reading Strategy: • Contrasts (differences) • Identify characters • Distinguish between characters • Personality • Behavior • Analyze conflicts caused by differences
Vocabulary: • Furtive • Lye • Oppress • Doctrine
Grammar & Style: • Sentence Fragment – a group of words punctuated as a sentence • A complete sentence must contain a subject, a verb, and express a complete thought. • Example: • The dog ran. • The dog ran across the street. • Ran across the street.
Project: Create a quilt. • Create a quilt using common materials • Quilt must be representative of you and your life (family) • Quilt must contain elements of culture, history, and lifestyle (symbolism) • Must display shape, texture, and color • You must be able to explain the displays in your quilt • Size: (max: 1 poster, minimum: ½ poster) • Materials: cloth, construction paper, poster board, coloring and craft items (no pictures unless drawn) • Due date: Thursday, May 10 • Project will be graded on • Neatness & Appearance • Creativity • Use of shape, texture, and color • Applicability of symbols (explain) • Compliance with directions
